Other Ministries

California Jesuits have served beyond the Province’s geographic borders for many years. Their vocation takes them into a variety of ministries—places, in Frederich Buechner’s words, "where your deep gladness meets the world's deep need."


Christian Life Community (CLC)

CLC groups focus on the Spiritual Exercises and meet weekly or biweekly in small groups. This international movement pursues community, spirituality, and mission, including service to the poor. Visit www.clcusa-west

Jesuit Refugee Service

Woman playing with childrenFor 25 years, JRS workers have accompanied, served, and defended the rights of refugees and other forcibly displaced people in 57 countries throughout the world. One California Jesuit serves on the domestic staff and others serve abroad. Visit

Vatican Observatory Research Group

This Arizona unit, an arm of the Vatican Observatory near Rome, continues the tradition of Jesuit research and teaching in astronomy that began in the 16th century with Matteo Ricci’s work in Europe and China. One California Province priest collaborates with other Jesuit astronomers of  the Vatican Observatory Research Group.Visit


Ignatian Volunteer Corps

Through the IVC, men and women age 50-plus can volunteer to serve in social ministries in their local communities two days a week, 10 months a year. They also reflect on their experience individually, with spiritual directors, and as a community. Visit

Ignatian Solidarity Network

A crowd of students holding white crossesISN promotes solidarity among individuals and groups—including Jesuit-affiliated schools, parishes, retreat centers, and independent organizations—to live out “a faith that does justice.”

ISN annual events include the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice at the U.S. Army’s Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (formerly School of the Americas) in Columbus, Georgia. Each fall, Jesuits from our Province join thousands of laypersons for three days of prayer, worship, and protest directed at righting social injustices.Visit

Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University

The Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University in Berkeley, California, was established in 1969 as one of the member schools of the Graduate Theological Union. Tracing its roots back to 1934, the Jesuit School of Theology (JST) is one of the two Jesuit theological centers in the United States operated by the Society of Jesus. California Province Jesuits serve on the faculty and staff. Students attending the JST work at St. Patrick and four other parishes in the Diocese of Oakland. Visit

PICO National Network

A vibrant network of more than 1,000 faith-based community organizations in 150 cities and 17 states, PICO seeks to create innovative solutions to problems such as providing better access to health care, improving public schools, making neighborhoods safer and housing more affordable. Multicultural and nonpartisan, PICO provides an opportunity for people to translate their faith into action. More than 50 different religious denominations and faith traditions are part of PICO. Each year, PICO brings lay organizers together for reflection and training. Visit
